In 1970 a great number of small municipalities merged to become the new municipality of Borsele (not a spelling mistake - the municipality is spelled with one s - the now village and capital of the municipality is spelled with two s's. They include Baarland, Borssele, Driewegen, Ellewoutsdijk, Heinkenszand, Hoedekenskerke, Kwadendamme, Lewedorp, Nieuwdorp, Nisse, Oudelande, Ovezande, 's-Gravenpolder, 's-Heer Abtskerke, 's-Heer Arendskerke and 's-Heerenhoek.
Baarland (Zeeland province) adopted 29 June 1954 a
flag, vertical black and yellow, with the shield of the coat of arms in the
upper hoist (adopted 31 July 1817 and 17 April 1950): on yellow (gold), a black
bear).
Since 1970 Baarland has been part the municipality of Borsele.
