Ancona - Just like the S. Maurice flag previously spotted at
the "Lazaretto", but with "Greek" cross.
Nowadays flown both at Town Hall and from "Lazaretto".
The explanation should derive from its history, (cf. with Medieval Flag or Ensign): It was founded by the
Dorians (it's inhabitants are still called either Dorian or
Anconetan), and named after the Greek word "ankon"
(elbow), due to the shape of it's bay. Doesn't surprise so that
it has a Greek cross other than a Latin one.

Znamierowski [zna00] shows (p.
233) the flag of Ancona without specifying its status. Ancona
flag is a red field with a yellow cross. It is shown also as a
'medieval flag or ensign' below but the modern flag having a
yellow 'Swiss' cross on a red field. Ancona is the capital of the
region Marche and province of Ancona. The city has ca. 110,000
inhabitants, and is famous for the triumphal arch built by
Trajanus (Roman emperor from 98 to 117) and its
Romanesque-Byzantine cathedral (XI-XIIIth centuries).

The image shows a red over white ensign. It is a common
mistake to be found on many old flag charts and book
(Norie-Hobbs, J. Gradon (Insigna Navalia, 1686)). The correct
flag used by Ancona under the Church State was red over yellow,
traditionals colours (Deppermann, Siegel,...).

This flag appears at J.W Norie - J.S. Hobbs Flaggen aller
seefahrenden Nationen, 1971 [ nor71]
(original print 1848) as: "162 Ancona".

Steenbergen book [stb62] show
as No. 174 plain white flag. Perhaps should be red over yellow.

A horizontal tricolour light blue - yellow - red with the
words REPUBBLICA ANCONITANA in the yellow strip. Used
till 7 March 1798 when Ancona joined the Roman Republic.

The Republic of Ancona was proclaimed (with french help) on 19
November 1797. The flag was abolished when the republic was
merged into the Roman Republic on
7 March 1798.

Roberto Breschi, in his presantation: "Flags in
Italy under Napoleon's pressure" at ICV 20 in Stockholm,
gave 17 November 1797 as the date of adoption.
