Savoy has been using the red flag with white cross since the
Middle Ages.
The origin of the arms of Savoy is the same as the one of the flag of
the Sovereign Order of Malta. These may have
been given by the then Pope to Amedée of Savoy, when he was
sent to fight the "Infidels" in the eastern part of the Mediterranean
sea. A link with the Crusades is also possible.
