Current flag of the Regional Council

[Poitou-Charentes]by Philippe-Pierre Darras

The flag is green and blue separated on the diagonal by a curved red stripe. The logo appears in the right lower corner. On the left corner there is the name of the region in white. The flag was adopted in 1993. Its proportions are 1 x 1,50 m or 1,50 x 2,25 m.

The flag symbolizes the strength of the 'Arc Atlantique' uniting the regions of Western Europe. Green stands for the land, blue for the ocean, and their being used together recalls the 'Marais poitevin' (the marshes of Poitou), one of the region's natural features. Red stands for sunsets.

Philippe-Pierre Darras, 18 January 1999

Former flags of the Regional Council

The history of the flags of the Poitou Charente Regional Council was published in Franciae Vexilla [frv] (number 9) and the flag shown above is not referred to. The flags described are the following:

[First flag of Poitou-Charentes regional council]by Jaume Ollé

This flag was created by the manufacturer Doublet and was based on a logo designed by the Clin d'Oeil agency. The description was communicated by Annette Dufour, attaché de presse of the regional council.

[Flag of Poitou-Charentes regional council, 1987]by Jaume Ollé

A new logo designed by the Chantal de Lassus agency was adopted on 10 July 1987. The flag was created by the manufacturer Festa. Source: a second communication from Annette Dufour, dated 26 September 1991.

[Reported flag of Poitou-Charentes regional council, 1993]by Jaume Ollé

A new flag was adopted at the end of 1993, based on a logo designed by the Zimage agency. Source: a graphic sheet communicated by Annette Dufour on 5 May 1995. The red line represents the 'Atlantic Arch' regional organization, which groups regions from Scotland to the Algarve. All of these flags were also communicated to me some months ago by Lucien Philippe.

Jaume Ollé, 6 May 1998.

The graphic sheet (charte graphique in French) doesn't mention the last flag. That flag, white with the logo in the middle, didn't exist.
