The banner of Anne de Bretagne (1476-1513)

Anne de Bretagne, François II's daughter, used successively three banners:

  • on her first banner were the arms of Brittany and Foix (from her mother Marguerite de Foix).

  • as duchess (1488-1491)

[Anne de France]by Michel Bolloré

  • as queen of France (1491-1513)

She had married Maximilian of Austria in 1490. Charles VIII, king of France, did not accept to see his Austrian enemy occupying the west of France. He brokes Anne's marriage and married her. Anne became queen of France, and married Louis XII after Charles VIII's death. The Royal Family of France used the ermine until 1544.


The banner of Claude de France (1499-1524)

Claude de France, Louis XII and Anne de Bretagne's daughter used three banners:

  • as princess of France

  • as countess of Angoulême, following her marriage with François d'Angoulême in 1514

  • and finally as queen of France, after the coronation of her husband as François I in 1515.


The banner of the Dauphin François

The son of François I and Claude de France was Dauphin and duke of Brittany (1532-1536).
In 1532 the union of France with Brittany was definitive.


The banners of the last dukes of Brittany

Henri, François' brother, became Dauphin in 1536 and was crowned duke of Brittany in 1537. He used François' banner, and was crowned king of France as Henri II in 1547.

The last duke of Brittany, François, crowned in 1544, used the first banner of his grand-mother Claude de France.
