Overview

Adopted: 18 August 1998. Prop: 7:11. Poltsamaa is a rural municipality (vald) in Jogevamaa County (Maakond).
Dov Gutterman, 19 November 1999

Põltsamaa vald - The coat of arms was created from the name Põltsamaa (põld see maa = field this land). Near Põltsamaa are many bountiful fields filled with various grains and cereals. There are three gold head of grain on the coat of arms. The three golden heads symbolize wheat and the bread it produces, which has been Estonia's principle food through the ages. Generally, the coat of arms is a symbol of farming, which allows people to be close to nature and is considered respectable work. Traditionally, country people work very hard. Besides being hard workers, area people have traditionally embraced education and culture.
The clover leaves around the coat of arms symbolize the second branch of agriculture - animal breeding. These clover leaves are also a reference to the cross - the most widely spread symbol of christianity in the world. The green on the coat of arms is also a metaphor of nature, the new life of eternity, and youthfulness. The gold is a metaphor for ripe grains, richness, and respectfulness.
