Guayas is a province in central coastal area of Ecuador in
Costa region. Capital is Guayaquil.
Zeljko Heimer, 15 July 1996
The well known flag of blue, white, blue, white, blue
horizontal with three white stars in the central blue. This flag
was used by the Revolutionary movement in 1820 ("Junta
revolucionaria de Guayaquil", 9 October 1820).

According to <members.nbci.com/cesario/simbolos.html
>, the Guayas Province flag which Guayaquil is its capital, is
the city flag and not of the province .However, it is probably
used by both (See: <www.turismoguayas.com>).
Coat of Arms of the city and the province at the same pages.

Flag and Coat of Arms could be seen at <www.explored.com.ec>.

Having been at Guayaquil, Guayas, Ecuador, I have seen this
two versions on the flag. They have the same pattern: five
bands of blue and white alternated, the blue is a light sky blue,
and the bands are equal-sized. Three white five-pointed stars is
the central blue band. The stars are either with a point to
the top as above or with no point to the top, bottom, left or
right as in the Variant.
I am not sure if the flag(s) is for the Guayas province, the
Guayaquil canton or the Guayaquil city, nor if they are two
different flags (i.e. one for the city and one for the province)
or two versions of the same flag.

At <www.turismoguayas.com>
it says explicitely: "La Bandera de la Provincia del Guayas
es la misma del cantón Guayaquil", Which I would translate
as: The flag of the province of Guayas is also that of the Canton
Guayayquil.
So, it seems we can put an end to our speculations about
different variants for province and canton. Their flags really
are the same flag.

Interesting: the Guayas page at <www.cpg.gov.ec> shows two
versions of the arms. On the main frame it has old w-b-w
Ecuadorian flags supporting the shield, on the emblems frame ist
has starless Guayas flags.
Any reason or dates for that change known?
