Joseph Nüsse shows on his website colour pictures of several house flags of
shipping companies. The site is a very good source since it shows pictures of
*real* flags. It is clear from his website that Joseph served (and maybe still
serves) in the merchant navy and most probably regrets the decline in merchant
shipping. The website disclaimer says that most of the companies whose house
flags are shown there have gone out of business.

This logo is probably best known from Aalborg Portland's main product:
cement, as it is printed on the paper bags that the cement is sold in.

White flag with a red seven-pointed star in the middle, an elongated and
symmetrical Danish national flag placed along the upper edge of the flag, and a
red stripe charged with progress in white placed along the lower edge of the
flag. I guess this is an other Maersk-related company.
Ivan Sache, 16 November 2002
No, not Maersk. Besides, the company seems to have gone belly-up in the
summer of 2000. There was talk of a management buy-out, but that seems to have
failed.

Red flag with a white seven-pointed star. This is the Maersk star, is not it?
We show a similar flag for P. Brown Jun. & Co.
Ivan Sache, 16 November 2002
No, Norden was established in 1871, the first Maersk company (D/S Svendborg)
is from 1904.

The World Salvage Directory (http://www.marine-salvage.com/wsd_int.htm)
of the International Salvage Union (ISU) (http://www.marine-salvage.com)
lists the member companies and show the houseflag of some of them (on each
individual company page, linked from the directory). The flag of A/S Em. Z. Svitzer
is a white flag with a blue Malta cross in the middle. Based in Brøndby, the
company refloated in 1994 the 'Bravo', which was lost by a Russian tug whilst
under tow from Croatia to Norway and grounded, and delivered it to Grimstad
(South Norway).

Red flag with a trapezoidal swallow
tail, a green trapezoid placed along the hoist, a thin white rectangular stripe
between the green trapezoid and the fly, and the white letters JS placed above
and beneath the white stripe, respectively. This a slightly different
Lauritzen's houseflag from that above. There are no letters on it and the flag
is made rectangular and symmetrical by adding a green trapezoidal along the fly.
That flag is dated 1963.

Blue flag with a white snow flake-like emblem in the middle, with eight rays
Ivan Sache, 16 November 2002
These days, they seem to be using another logo (they may have merged with
someone..), as seen on
http://www.mols-linien.dk/ I think the snow flake emblem has to do with
their (former?) engagement with DIFKO, an
investment company.

White flag with a big red O in the middle and a blue vertical stripe placed
along the hoist, charged with a representation of the constellation of Orion in
white. Orion was a giant hunter who offended the goddess Artemis. As a
punishment, she killed him and changed him into a constellation. The three stars
placed in diagonal in the middle of the constellation are known as Orion's Belt.

The current incarnation of the SFDS appears only to exist to operate the M/S
Helge, which flies Red, a White double-bladed axe with details in Blue. I
don't know what happened to the original SFDS, but the building of the
SFDS (still showing the Axe above the door) is hired by the unrelated shipping
company T&C Thor Chartering A/S.

Horizontal red, green, red, approximately 4, 6, 4 units high, with the
colours separated from each other and the edges by 1 unit of white. (Though this
note is a clear description, it does not agree with my recollection. I think
there should be a centered "T & C" in White on the middle stripe.)
http://www.tc-as.dk does show that, but it
does not show the small border around the flag that I thought I saw.
