The arms were granted in 1769 when Pirmasens received city rights from Count Ludwig IX of Hesse-Darmstadt. At the same time a seal was devised showing a fortress with the lion of Hesse standing on two thunderbolts on the main tower, and surrounded by birds. This complicated and un-heraldic composition was transformed into more proper arms in 1845 granted by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. These were the arms as shown above. The city was simplified and the birds removed. The arms, however, were not properly described, so many versions of the arms have been used since.
