A red St. George cross on a blue field. Landesflagge 1921-1935. In use for local and regional authorities since 1952.

Norman Martin, March 1998

The flag adopted on 3 October 1919 for the Land was the blue one with the red cross. The red over blue striped flag was the Landesfarben flag.

Jaume Ollé and/or Mario Fabretto, 24 August 1998

Santiago Dotor, 22 September 2000

According to the Bekanntmachung des Staatsministeriums für den Freistaat Oldenburg betreffend das Führen von Flaggen vom 3. Oktober 1919 ("Declaration of the State Ministry of the Free State of Oldenburg regarding the Use of Flags of 3rd October 1919") the width of the red cross is a fourth of the flag width.

Optional Civil Flag

Landesfarben

[Optional Civil Flag (Oldenburg, Germany)] 2:3
by Jaume Ollé and Jorge Candeias

Red-blue bicolour.

Norman Martin, March 1998

Red over blue. Norman Martin and other sources report dark blue.

Jaume Ollé, 1 July 1998

The Landesfarben was an optional civil flag, but when the Landesflagge was popular (as was often the case in traditionally maritime states), the use of the Landesfarben was limited. As with the Landesflagge, the Landesfarben ceased to be used in 1935, though I would not be surprised if some informal use continued as long as the official flags were prominently displayed, but it seems to have been discouraged. I am unaware of any actual use.

Norman Martin, 22 September 2000

According to Neubecker 1939a this flag (Oldenburg[ische] Dienstflagge) was adopted in 1926. The Imperial state ensign was used until 1921.
