Vancouver Island, a large island in the Pacific Ocean off Canada's west coast, was once a separate colony from British Columbia, which it is a part of now. Vancouver is the name of the third-largest city in Canada (largest in BC), and oddly enough it is not on Vancouver Island, but on the mainland.
The city was not founded until the late 1880s. The capital of BC, Victoria,
a much smaller city than Vancouver, is on Vancouver Island. Confusing? You
bet!

Does anyone have an image of the City of Vancouver? The one posted was that of Vancouver Island. I found the following description:
"The official City of Vancouver Flag was approved by Vancouver City Council
on May 17, 1983, and officially unveiled on May 31, 1983. The basic elements
of the design include a bottom chevron of green to represent the land on
which the City is built and the forests from which a good deal of its property
has arisen. The alternating waving bars of blue and white symbolize the sea,
which is the other principal foundation of the City's growth."
