Karakachans

by Stoyan Antonov

In 1991 was established The Cultural and Educational Association of Karakachani in Bulgaria, based in the city of Sliven (renamed Federation of the Cultural and Educational Associations of Karakachani in Bulgaria in 1995). The Federation has a logo, called 'flambura', i. e. a banner. The origin of that "flag" comes from the traditional Karakachani wedding banner. As to the ethnonym "Karakachani", it is in conformity with Bulgarian ethnological issues (including English edition of the book Communities and Identities in Bulgaria, Longo Editore Ravenna, 1999, ISBN 88-8063-210-8), unlike the Greek "Sarakatsani".
