Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve (27,500 inhabitants) is located in the arrondissement of Nivelles.
Ottignies is the home city of CEBED,
i.e. where Michel Lupant, current President of
FIAV, lives.
Louvain-la-Neuve (New Louvain), in Wallonia, is opposed to
Leuven, in Flanders. In 1968, violent
riots on linguistic basis in the University of Leuven caused the
exile of all French-speaking departments to the newly created
University of Louvain-la-Neuve. The separation occurred before the
so-called Egmont pact (1977), which created the three regions of
Brussels-Capital, Flanders and Wallonia.
The University of Leuven was founded in 1425, suppressed in 1830 and
reestablished in 1835 as a Roman Catholic University.
The flag of Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve is horizontally divided yellow-blue-yellow (2:1:2). Proportions are 2:3.
The flag was adopted on 18 December 1991.
