Description of the flag

Nevele (11,000 inhabitants) is located in the arrondissement of Ghent.

The flag is: Or, a cross Gules, in each corner accompanied by a lion rampant Gules. Proportions are 2:3.

The flag is derived from the municipal coat of arms, described as follows:

"The arms were granted on November 26, 1926. The arms are derived from the 14th century seal of the town. The cross was awarded by the Counts of Flanders to Wouter van Nevele after his crusade in the 12th century. The lions were probably added by the Ghistelle family, Lords of Nevele in the 14th century. A 17th century seal of the city also shows the cross with the four lions."

The flag was adopted on 3 July 1978.
