The city is known because of the books of Louis Paul Boon about the social disturbances in the beginning of the 20th century.

The city is also well known for its onions. The inhabitants of Aalst are refered to as Ajuinboeren or Ajuinpelders (onion farmers or onion peelers, respectively).
