Description of the flag

Merchtem (13,000 inhabitants) is located in the arrondissement of Halle-Vilvoorde.

The flag is: Argent, a fess Gules, inescutcheon Or, a city gate Gules, on top of which a flag Sable, a lion rampant Or, armed and tongued Gules. Proportions are 2:3 and 1:2:1, and the flag in the escutcheon is flying to the hoist.

The flag was adopted on 6 June 1989.
